The Galileo trap

Galileo Galilei took the position that the earth revolved around the sun - even if the rest of the world saw it differently. He stood firm and was right. For this he is celebrated as a hero.

The problem: Galileo is an example of survivorship bias. How many scientists (or people in general) have there been who were deeply convinced of something and were simply wrong?

Actually, if you go against the prevailing view, the chances of being wrong are high. I'm thinking of the followers of many conspiracy myths. Everyone there has the feeling that they are a Galileo and that the Powers That Be are suppressing the truth.
